Most of my life I believed I couldn't draw. In my younger years, I loved to trace and color, but I never felt that I could sketch or draw.  I always seem to be surrounded by people who doodle for fun.  Since I'm a teacher, I've learned how to compensate over the years, but I've never felt confident in my drawing ability.

Enter Directed Drawing!  I've found this style of drawing to be the answer!  When I use simple shapes and alphabet letters, I'm able to produce some really cute art. Now, instead of "I can't draw", I'm now saying, "In order for me to draw something I have to try hard and practice."

I'm also a visual learner, as are many children.  I have to see it and do it to fully grasp a concept.  I guess Confucius was right all those years ago:

I hear and I forget.

I see and I remember.

I do and I understand.

I'm inspired to create easy directed drawings by everything:  greeting cards, animals, crafts, children's books, teaching themes, seasons, travel, and more!

Drawing Practice

Before I'm even ready to type up directions for the drawings, I practice each picture over 10 times.  I spend time looking at the lines and shapes.  I write out the step by step directions and practice them repeatedly until I've found something that will be easy for kids to follow.

Once I have a piece that I think will work, I try the directed drawing out on other people.  Then I go back to the drawing board (literally) one more time.  My own friends, family, and students draw and give feedback on them too.  They are my quality control group!

Drawing Instructions

There are so many great drawing tutorials which shown each step of the drawing in a picture box but without written instructions.  They intrigue me, but don't work for me.

On the other hand, my simple drawings include both visual and written instructions to help children work independently and grow in confidence.

I was 40 years old when my own drawing life was changed.  How?  I was given explicit oral instructions and the drawing was modeled for me.  Being taught this way helped me understand the size, shape and spacing to use.   Combining the auditory (listening) with the visual (seeing) experience made me realize that I could learn how to draw!

Easy Sketch Drawings

I don't use a computer for my line drawings or any clip art.  I hand draw each and every step, again and again.  Why? Practice makes progress!The picture steps are drawn with a simple black pen.  For the colored examples, I just use basic Crayola markers and Crayola crayons.  Nothing too fancy.  If I can do it, you can too!

If drawing isn't always easy for me, why do I create directed drawings for kids?

I believe having easy directed drawings are important because they fill children with confidence!  Directed drawings give a starting place for children to learn to draw, which they can build from.  Simple drawing activities inspire children to be more creative in the future!
